5 Self Tanner Tips to Get a Streak-Free Summer Glow All Year Long

Shave! Shaving is extremely important before applying self tanner in order to ensure a smooth application. Skipping this step can allow the tanner to soak into the hair follicles, leaving tiny brown spots in every pore!

Exfoliate! Exfoliating removes any dead skin cells left behind on the skin, ensuring that the tanner goes on smoothly. Personally, I find that if I do not exfoliate pre self-tan, that it comes on very blotchy and rough looking.

Apply lotion to the hands, knees, elbows, ankles, and feet immediately before applying the tanner. Self-tanner tends to appear darker on drier areas of the body. These are typically the driest parts, so apply a thin layer of lotion to them before tanning!

Use a tanning mitt! To be honest, I never understood why I should go out and buy a tanning mitt, when I was going to tan my hands anyway. However, a couple months ago, I bought Tarte's self tanner (which comes with a mitt) and fell in love! It really does help to avoid streaks and my tanner always looks flawless now! (Tip: it usually looks streaky as I apply my tanner, but it looks great after waiting the full 8 hours!)

Moisturize! It is exremelyyyyy important to moisturize during the days after self tanning. It keeps the tan looking smooth and makes it last longer too!
